The Design & Technology curriculum at St Joseph’s is structured to provide students with an appreciation of designing a range of products using different materials, all underpinned by one common design process.
At St Joseph's all pupils from Year 7 to Year 9 are taught Technology on a carousel, rotating across three topics each year. Key Stage 4 students then have the opportunity of opting to study Engineering (a double GCSE), Graphic Products or Food Technology with us. Successful candidates can further apply to study Product Design with Graphics at A Level, or BTEC Level 3 Engineering (equivalent to an A Level).

Art, Design and Technology Year 7 Project
Year 7's have a unique opportunity to follow a combined Art, Design and Technology (ADT) course. This prepares them with vital skills and practical understanding of these subjects and how they impact on our society. Student look at questioning techniques, research methods and visit the STEAM museum to engage with our local engineering heritage. They complete a skills based pop –up book demonstrating the research they have found on artists, designs, chefs and engineers. They also look at their own families and look at how creative skills are used by them in their everyday lives. This project supports the development of Literacy in the ADT subjects.
The second project that the Year 7 undertake is a skills based program looking at different types of drawing including, observation, perspective, isometric, 2D Design and orthographic. Students learn how difference skills suit different purposes. They are also introduced to how a design brief works and complete a task of designing to purpose using colour theory. This project also looks to develop their ideas and creative skills as they produce a logo for their chosen product. This project supports the development of Numeracy in the ADT subjects.
After Christmas the Y7 are then regrouped to start to use these skills in individual projects. Over the course of the remaining 4 terms they rotate around a carousel including ART: Printmaking, ART: Clay, TECHNOLOGY: Food and Nutrition, TECHNOLOGY: Resistant Materials, TECHNOLOGY: Graphics.

Integrating Knowledge and Skills
In Year 8 students will extend their skills and knowledge base established in Year 7. In doing so, they integrate areas of knowledge previously treated separately to build projects of a more holistic nature. They will once again apply their learning to a common design and make process throughout. The projects cut across knowledge and skills in other curriculum areas including Business & Enterprise and Citizenship.
Graphic Products- Board Game
Students will understand how to unite communities and cultures through the design of a board game. They will develop CAD/ CAM skills that were learned in year 7 to create a fully working game using plastic, paper and card. Students are encouraged to generate a wide range of ideas and think of the practicality of these in order to finally create an idea that would be commercially viable. This is a project that is closely related to GCSE graphic products.
Resistant Materials- Pizza Cutter
Students investigate ergonomics and apply the design and make process to the construction of a metal and plastic pizza cutter that is safe and comfortable to use. This module seeks to provide an introduction to engineering fabrication and give students who might later opt to take GCSE Engineering a taste of this interesting subject. They will develop skills and accuracy in marking out, cutting, shaping and joining metals and plastic. This will involve students in using a range of hand tools, machine tools and CAD/CAM.
Food Technology- Multi-Cultural Food
The food industry often has to produce ready made products to suit new trends or diets. In this module students concentrate on designing and making multi-cultural dishes. They will increase their knowledge of ingredients and further their kitchen skills. In the process of doing this they will reinforce their understanding of food safety and kitchen hygiene as a prevention of food poisoning.
Graphic Products- Movie Mug
Students are given the task of adapting a current film or TV programme into a movie idea. They will work on keeping the corporate identity of the original TV programme by practicing adapting typography and drawing characters. Students will learn technical drawing skills by drawing in isometric and marking out a net, this will enhance their overall drawing skill. The final aim of the project is to create a point of sale display with an electronic circuit and a mug that will have the branding of their idea upon it
Engineering – Computer Aided Design
Students are introduced to an advanced Computer Aided Design software package. They first learn a foundation of key skills before building on them to produce a range of challenging and three-dimensional models, equivalent to industry starter level. Our software licence permits students to take a copy of the program home.
Food Technology- Celebration Food
Students will further develop their kitchen skills by looking at celebration foods. Key themes will include food storage, safety and kitchen hygiene, function of ingredients and target audiences. This will heighten their design skills in preparation for the GCSE Food Technology option.
Years 10 & 11
The course consists of 2 Units, Unit 1 is an externally assessed written examination, and Unit 2 is a Controlled Assessment in the form of Coursework which is internally assessed.
Unit 1 contributes 40% of the final grade.
Unit 2 contributes 60% of the final grade.
The course is intended to give pupils an introduction to Engineering, this qualification allows students to develop skills and understanding which will be of use generally and as part of a progressive career path leading to further technical and/or academic qualifications.
The modular structure allows the course to be tailored to the need of the individual, with an insight into Design, Application of Technologies, Materials, and Processes. Key Skills (such as Communication, Application of Number, Information Technology, Working with Others, Improving own learning and performance, Problem Solving) can also be addressed by candidates following this course of study.
This course is ideally suited to individuals who intend pursuing a career in, Engineering, Product Design, or Manufacturing, at all levels.
Graphic Products students work on a main coursework project that is worth 60% of their overall marks. The coursework is usually based on a topic of the student’s choice, examples from the past have been:
Design a mobile phone and it’s packaging
Design a A5 pop-up book
Design a piece of packaging for a new 20p confectionary bar
Design a stationary pack for multinational use
Design a promotional product for the Olympics.
The student must research, design and make the product resulting in a final piece of making and a 20-30 A3 page coursework folder. An exam is also completed at the end of the course in year 11 that involves a drawing task and additional theory that will be taught on a weekly basis.
Students who take this subject will have the opportunity to acquire a variety of cooking skills by producing a range of products and meals. They will learn about the function of ingredients in recipes, nutrition and how to adapt recipes to meet current dietary issues. They will work independently showing kitchen techniques learned at key stage three.
They will look at creativity and innovation in products and appreciate the development of products. They will learn to use different equipment safely in order to develop their skills.
Students will document and record everything they do and see.
Students are expected to complete the homework set each week and to meet deadlines.
Students are expected to provide the ingredients for practical work – at least a weeks notice will be given for this.
The coursework is started in Year 10 and continues through to early year 11
The written exam will take place in Year 11
Revision for the exam will include practical work as well as theory.
